MelonAnarchy

From Numelon Wiki

MelonAnarchy is a Minecraft anarchy server announced by Richy Z, the CEO of Numelon, on the 24th of April 2024. The server aims to provide a more welcoming and enjoyable experience for players compared to traditional anarchy servers.

History[edit | edit source]

MelonAnarchy is a reincarnation of a previous anarchy server called "SpotAnarchy," which was launched in 2021. SpotAnarchy operated on legacy hardware with a limited internet connection of 10 megabits. Despite accumulating a Discord community, SpotAnarchy was discontinued after a year and a half due to declining popularity and high energy costs for hosting on legacy hardware.

Announcement and Launch[edit | edit source]

The official announcement for MelonAnarchy in the Numelon Discord server stated:

ℹ️ What is melonanarchy?

Minecraft anarchy servers often suffer from outdated Minecraft versions and a challenging environment for newcomers due to rampant griefing and cheating, particularly around spawn areas. melonanarchy seeks to address these issues by establishing a well-designed spawn with a radius of approximately 50 blocks. This ensures that players cannot easily grief the spawn or accidentally fall into endless voids created by cheaters, providing a more welcoming experience for new players.

Although melonanarchy does not prohibit cheating and maintains a mostly unmoderated environment, its primary goal is to foster enjoyment, inclusivity, and a cozy, welcoming community. By allowing players to connect using modern Minecraft versions and remaining relatively small and unpopular, the server aims to create a more intimate and friendly gaming experience for its members.

🧓 Our origins

We were plunged and conceived by friends as an innocent Minecraft anarchy server in 2021 called "SpotAnarchy", running on legacy hardware and a limited internet connection of only 10 megabits. (very slow!) It was advertised quite well and we accumulated around 10 daily players with an additional cozy Discord community present. However, after only a year and a half of service, SpotAnarchy was discontinued because of declining popularity, high energy costs for the server, and some other factors.

melonanarchy aims to be the rebirth of SpotAnarchy by providing a completely fresh start. Now we are hosted on top notch enterprise hardware with a stable, blazing internet connection and with a new modern touch!

The server was subsequently listed on many Minecraft server list websites to help gain some traction.

Updates[edit | edit source]

The server was updated to Minecraft's 1.21 "Tricky Trials" update on the 18th of June 2024, following a community poll where the "upgrade" vote won by a landslide, as was predicted.

Features[edit | edit source]

Spawn Area[edit | edit source]

Unlike many other anarchy servers, MelonAnarchy features spawn protection and a well-designed spawn area, aligning with the server's welcoming ethos. The spawn area is primarily composed of cherry blossom wood items, and is illuminated with glowstone. The pink color of the cherry trees was chosen to create a pleasant and inviting atmosphere. The spawn contains numerous signs directing users to exit spawn protection by moving at least 50 blocks away and warning them that beyond this point, they enter the wilderness where the unpredictable nature of anarchy servers begins.

The wall is made entirely of cobblestone blocks and reaches up to the sky, demonstrating the scale of the vandalism. The surrounding area includes grass and trees, with the wall casting a significant shadow over the landscape.

On the 1st of June, a user created a large cobblestone wall using lava and water, which extended to the build limit. This wall, resembling a triangle or massive cobblestone stairs, marked the first significant act of vandalism on the server. Additionally, a creeper was led near the spawn and intentionally detonated, highlighting the harsh realities of anarchy servers. The user responsible for these actions only joined once and did not return, as their sole motive was destruction. Due to the large amount of cobblestone, some users experienced lag when using certain texture packs that rendered Minecraft blocks in 3D, and others could not load the chunks where the wall was located, resulting in a void-like appearance.

The cobblestone wall has since been mitigated and removed by Richy using TNT obtained in survival mode. Although the removal process caused some damage to the surrounding land, the area has been repaired and restored by the Shovel Society, a group that formed at spawn. The wall remains a historical monument, and the land nearby has been healed. Richy Z, the owner, attempted to maintain a positive outlook on the vandalism situation, stating that it "adds some character to the anarchy server tbh." This sentiment has proven true, as the wall now stands as a piece of history, slightly lit up with glowstone, serving as a monument.

The image shows tall, narrow remnants of a cobblestone wall against a clear sky with light clouds. The cobblestone pieces are vertically oriented and appear weathered, indicating they are the remains of a larger structure that has been mostly removed.

The area includes various trees, including pink cherry trees, and several farms. The scene is well-lit, showcasing the detailed design and vibrant community space.

The Shovel Society currently inhabits most of the spawn area, including a nearby village. They have constructed significant infrastructure and provide starter packs for newcomers, although these contributions are more related to the group's activities rather than the spawn area itself.

The spawn area is well lit and designed with various functional elements. It includes multiple farms, such as a watermelon farm, cow farm, chicken farm, and extensive mines and quarries. The paths are illuminated, and the Shovel Society has utilised granite and acacia wood in their constructions surprisingly well. Two main buildings, marked with an axe icon and a shovel icon, serve as the headquarters of the Shovel Society.

The area also features vegetable and wheat crops, and cherry trees have been imported and planted near the spawn. A nearby village has been renovated with new blocks and integrated into the spawn area.

The spawn has evolved from a sparse landscape with a few acacia trees into a developed area with various buildings, vegetation, and community activities.

Community and Impact[edit | edit source]

MelonAnarchy has contributed to the recent growth of Numelon, particularly in terms of public appearance and community engagement. The server sees a daily player count of around 3 concurrent players, which is considered decent for an anarchy server when also accounting for its relatively low age.

The server is notable for its friendly and kind community, which contrasts with many other anarchy servers that are often associated with negative behaviours such as racism, homophobia, and extreme political views. The supportive community is likely a result of the server's initial introduction as a welcoming environment, attracting positive and inclusive players. The unique and vibrant community of MelonAnarchy is a subject of interest for further study.
